Trees nursing & planting

What we are concerned about:

The tree nursery start at Backpackers with the help of the cadets of Sarteneja and rangers from Shipstern Nature Reserve

The project is a response to the simple fact that Sarteneja is famous for wooden boat building which required a lot of trees. But now there is no trees left in the area because they where all cut ! Reading the excellent book from Jared Diamond Collapse, it’s easy to understand deforestation is one of the reason of societal collapses. Even the Maya experience the same trouble long time before colonialist arrived.

In partnership with Shipstern Nature Reserve, the project of reforestation Mahogany is just starting. Seeds have been collected by the rangers of Shipstern Nature Reserve, thanks to Joel and Lester.

The cadets, the group of scouts of Sarteneja, helped use to plant the seeds at the tree nursery at Backpackers Paradise.

A walk at the Mahogany tree park of Shipstern Nature Reserve was a good occasion to talk with the kids about nature and how our natural resources are important to preserve.

The 18 of July 2010, the local farmers interested in tree planting came at the meeting at Backpackers Paradise and the 200 young Mahoganies were given to them for free. We even delivered some with our horses buggy.

Come and help us to reforest Belize !

The young trees will be plant as well in small farms around Sarteneja. We hope it will encourage tree planting among the community and help small farmers to keep their lands instead of selling them to speculators. Help us to promote self sufficiency for our community and get involve in this reforestation program !
